Te cuento Etiopía: Lucy, la primera mujer

Me llamo Lucy, bueno no, me llamarán Lucy por lo que prefiero no decir mi nombre verdadero, será con este con el que pasaré a formar parte de la historia de la humanidad.

Vivo en Hadar, en la región de Afar, Etiopía. En Afar la vida no es fácil y comer se convierte en una labor que nos ocupa todo el día. Aunque dentro de mucho tiempo, Afar será un terreno árido y polvoriento, hoy es una zona hermosa, llena de árboles y vegetación. No sé lo sucedido en el futuro, no sé si podrán mis descendientes comprobar lo hermosa que es Etiopía, pero me gusta pensar que algún día obtendrá el reconocimiento que se merece al ser la cuna del ser humano.

Vivimos en tribus y todavía no somos tan parecidos a vosotros como llegarán a serlo nuestros descendientes. Soy una mujer pequeña pero lucho a diario para que la naturaleza no pueda conmigo, para trabajar duro y para hacerme valer tanto o más que el hombre. Camino erguida y eso me ha permitido llevar una vida con la que mis tatarabuelos hubiesen soñado.

Los hombres son grandes, fuertes y admirables, pero como pasará tantas veces en el futuro, somos las mujeres las que llevamos la comida a la tribu, las que trabajamos duro, las que parimos y vemos como muchos de nuestros hijos no llegan a crecer. Las que conseguimos que la especia avance y evolucione.

Tengo 18 años y he vivido tanto… Seguro que dentro de tres millones de años podéis sonreír con esta afirmación, pero así es,  mi vida ha sido larga, dura, pero feliz.

Nací aquí, en Hadar. Mi madre era más baja de estatura de lo que yo soy ahora y no andaba tan erguida como yo lo hago, quizás, y aunque me duela decirlo, era menos inteligente que yo, pero nunca olvidaré que trabajaba de sol a sol para dar de comer a la tribu, para que yo nunca pasase hambre y tampoco mis hermanos. Mi madre murió hace tiempo, tanto que no puedo recordarlo, además de que todavía no contamos el tiempo como vosotros lo haréis dentro de millones de años.

Toda mi vida he estado en Hadar, y en Hadar moriré junto a mi familia. He tenido tres hijos y dos hijas. Ahora casi todos son integrantes activos de la tribu y trabajan junto al resto, pero hubo un tiempo que tuve que cuidar de ellos, que buscarles comida y procurar que estuvieran sanos.

Hoy ya soy vieja y he conseguido recogiendo frutos de los árboles y enfrentándome a todo tipo de criaturas y  a algunos de nosotros, que sobrevivan dos de mis hijos y una hija, por lo que puedo considerarme una mujer afortunada.

Duermo en los árboles, no podéis imaginar el placer de sentirse seguro en una rama y ver las estrellas infinitas mientras oyes los ruidos de las noches. Así, noche tras noche, consigo dormirme muy rápido. A veces, me da pena no poder disfrutar más de los hermosos cielos estrellados etíopes, pero estoy tan cansada.

Pero, sin duda, lo mejor de dormir en los árboles es despertarse. En cuanto el primer rayo de luz asoma, abro los ojos y contemplar la hermosa sabana es indescriptible. El intenso verdor, los animales salvajes, la tribu comenzando a moverse al ritmo del sol, me hacen sentirme libre.

Las mañanas me encantan. Bajar de los árboles y caminar hasta el agua es mi actividad favorita del día. Camino, me gusta sentir la tierra bajo mis pies, hasta llegar al agua fresca donde bebo hasta que no cabe en mi estomago nada más. Me gusta mirarme en el agua cristalina, verme con mis propios ojos, un milagro de la naturaleza que tan sólo nos permite el agua. Así, puedo ver mi cara pequeña y peluda, si no, no sabría cómo soy.

Cuando camino de un lado para otro, todo el día, buscando frutos que llevarme a la boca y que llevar más tarde a la tribu, me siento orgullosa de mi misma. No sé como hacían mis antepasados para vivir todo el día en los árboles y no poder disfrutar del placer de caminar.

Yo me quejo de mi vida muchas veces al día, de lo sacrificado que es vivir únicamente para sobrevivir, para ver una noche estrellada más, para ver la inmensa Etiopía al despertar, pero soy afortunada, frente a mis antepasados vivo una vida cómoda, quizás no tanto como la que llevéis en el futuro , pero cómoda al fin y al cabo.

Tras refrescarme con el agua, empiezo mi jornada diaria. Camino y camino durante horas para encontrar árboles que contengan dulces frutos. Trepo en todos los que sospecho que puedo encontrar frutos con azucares. Están riquísimos y te hacen sentir fuerte, pero muchos días no encuentro ninguno, depende  también de las lluvias.

Soy paciente y en tiempo de sequía puedo dedicar muchas horas a buscar los mejores manjares, pero cuando empiezo a estar cansada, y a medida que envejezco esto es antes, acabo rindiéndome a la comida por supervivencia. En la tribu podemos pasarnos días comiendo semillas, raíces, tubérculos o cortezas, su sabor no es muy bueno pero llenan. Lo peor son los más pequeños, reclaman la fruta dulce con más insistencia y nos las recuerdan a todos provocando un pinchazo en el estómago al imaginar su sabor.

Algún día crecerán y verán cómo no siempre es fácil conseguir comida rica y que lo importante es crecer. Lo verán, lo sentirán en cada miembro de su familia que pierdan, en cada hermano que no llegue a adulto, en cada hijo que no supere los primeros años.

La vida hace tres millones de años no era fácil, os lo aseguro, pero pude conocer una tierra hermosa, fértil, en la que cada estrella te hacía un guiño, cada hoja te susurraba, cada paso en la tierra húmeda te hacía sentir importante.

Dentro de pocos años moriré, pero voy a dejar mi huella en esta tierra llena de vida que algún día llamareis Etiopía.  Voy a formar parte de la historia, voy a ser mundialmente conocida, sin saberlo, ni mucho menos pretenderlo ya que mis restos quedarán para siempre aquí.

Sé que no se hablará de mi como de otras mujeres que no se sabe si existieron, las que dicen que fueron las primeras, una dirán que se llama Eva y, lo más increíble,  que nació de la costilla de un hombre y que será expulsada del paraíso por comer una fruta dulce, ¿por qué no iba a hacerlo?, y la otra que se llama Lilith, y creo que esta no nace de ninguna costilla y que no es expulsada de ningún sitio porque se fue ella sola al no querer que nadie le prohibiera nada.

Tardarán mucho en hablar de Lucy. En general solo los estudiosos del ser humano sabrán de mi existencia pero yo sí he sido real. Yo sí he sido de las primeras mujeres y me enfrento al igual que los hombres a mi entorno, con mi metro diez y mis escasos treinta kilos.

Soy la primera mujer en hacer historia, la primera en negarse a abandonar Etiopía. Mis huesos quedarán por siempre en Hadar, la tierra verde de Afar que me vio nacer y me verá morir. Durante más de tres millones de años, no podré caminar pero seguiré sintiendo la tierra fresca y húmeda, seguiré viendo los cielos estrellados de Etiopía, oyendo los ruidos de la noche y sintiendo el caer de las hojas.

La vida ha sido dura pero me moriré con la tranquilidad de saber que viví en Hadar, en la tierra más hermosa, y que seguiré aquí por muchos años.

Me llamarán Lucy y yo sí fui la primera mujer.
